Most Important Article

The most important article on the Americas Section is the Mexican Nun Fighting Against Drug Wars by Laura Dunnagan.  This story is about how the Mexican community has a lot of drug trafficking and what a nun has done prevent the drug trafficking.  The nun’s name is Sister Consuelo Morales and is 63 pears old.  She stands at 5’3″.  She leads marches, confronts state governors, state prosecutors, detectives, and counsels grieving mothers and families.  She also helps victims of the drug violence.   file complaints that the Mexican government doesn’t want to deal with- disappearances, abductions, murders, people being tortured, all at the expense of the police and soldiers who work for the government.

Sister Consuelo’s greatest accomplishment is that she got 15 people arrested, including police and government officials.  Her career has come with many threats of death and harassment.

The story is so significant because she is influencing people to stop the drug trafficking in Mexico and she providing the knowledge of what drug trafficking and what happens when you get caught for the young.  She also is keeping the community form getting involved in the system drug trafficking.

Mexico activist seek ICC investigation of drug wars

Mexican activists have asked the International Criminal Court to investigate President Felipe Calderon over the torture and killing of civilians in the war on drugs.

There was a petition that was signed by more than 18.000 citizens.  PEole signed this to get the ICC to investigate the most wanted drug lord,Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.  The Mexican government has denied that accusation of crimes.

I don’t know why they won’t try to get rid of this person before he becomes a influence to the youth and put more and more people in danger of getting into the drug war.

GM Shares Dive on Profit Fall and Weak Outlook.

Shares in General Motors have fallen 11% after the company reported a fall in profits and a weak outlook.  Net income  came in at 1.7 billion for the third quarter of the year, down 17.6% form the same period last year.  It was hit by losses in Europe and South America.

The rival, Ford, posted profits for the third quarter that there were almost as high as GM’s, despite sales being 10%lower.  The company warned it would not be able to meet it target of breaking even in  Europe this year. GM emerged from bankruptcy in 2009 after a $52bn taxpayer-funded bailout. The US Treasury still owns 32% of GM’s ordinary shares.

I wonder if the government will help bail them out again like they the last.  I think they shouldn’t because that will be a waste money.  They do any better than they did last time before they bankrupt.

Indian Removal Act Alternative

The Indian Removal Act was trying to set policies to make treaties for the Native Americans.  They were trying to make what they were doing alright by rationalize conquest.  The US Congress gave them this passage to do this.  The result of them trying to rationalize was that it became an unofficial national policy after the War of 1812 and they had lost thousands of lives and the “Trail of Tears”.  This result not inevitable there were many other options that we could take but we chose that one.  The United States could have had a peaceful coexistence meaning that we could live with them among one society.  We could have had commitment to racial harmony mean that we could also live in one society.  Another way it was alternative was that we could have had an intermarriage which could have made allies with two different nations, or we could have just made Native American States.

I don’t think that making Native American States would have because this makes it difficult to find enough space for all the people in Native Americans and this would have been harder on the Us Congress to make these states just for the Native Americans.  The reason that it would be harder for US Congress to make new states just for the Native Americans is because they would have to find a way to get it approved; either by the European Americans or the just the Native Americans or the European Americans.  This might have cause violence and wars and also this might cause European Americans to force the Americans to one isolated land.

If the Congress had gone another direction then we would be able to interact with the Native Americans peacefully.  We wouldn’t have had these wars with these different Indian tribes and we would have not needed Davy Crockett to defend the Native Americans in court.  We didn’t have to move some of the Indians like the Cherokee because they had already adapted to the modern tomes because they had housing that was similar to the European Americans.  We should have just compromised with them and let them stay in their natural and we can just build around it.  This method would have been easier on us and the Native Americans because they wouldn’t have to move half way across the country.  It would be easier on us because then we wouldn’t have to make the Indian Removal Act in the first place so we would a lot more time to do with more important things than this.

The Act that should have been was the Compromise of Land Act which would have set policies that the Americans would build around the Native Americans and there wouldn’t any argumentation within the community.  Whoever failed to follow this act would be severely punished.  This would be enforced by the Government and the severe punishment will be put into jail and if a second offense then will be sentenced to life in prison.  The Act would have worked in this time because then there wouldn’t be any confrontation with Native Americans and the European Americans.  It also would have worked in this time because it would have allowed them to still explore into the western lands and when you get there then you make a settlement between the Native Americans.  This would let the Native Americans to adapt to the new society that was forming.

The Americans decision for the Indians was not right and there were many other ways that this could and should have been handled.  The way that I have chosen would have worked effectively and wouldn’t have been harsh.  All the Native Americans would have to do is share their land with European Americans and leave in coexistence.  There would have been no people dead and there wouldn’t be any isolation.  The Native Americans would be living in all parts of the United States.

BP Wins Approvals to Resume Drilling in the Gulf of Mexico

BP has won approval to resume drilling in the Gulf Mexico, 18 months  after the well exploded and killed 11 workers.  Then it caused a natural disaster.  I don’t understand why they got this passed and how they had the money to pay these and then turn around and go back to the well.

Regulators had approved plans for drilling only depths of 6,000 and 200 miles off the coast of New Orleans.  US official said in a statement.  “Out review of BP’s plan included verification of BP’s compliance with the heightened standards.”  The US Bureau of  Ocean Energy Management said that BP’s exploration plan meets the stringent standards issued by the government.

During the Deep water disaster people were questioning if BP had a future in the US.

Student Protests turn Violent in Chile Capital Santiago

Police had fired tear gas and water canons, while masked students threw home made firebombs and set alight barricades near the university.  This is the biggest protest that Chile ever had  ever since they accepted democracy again.  The government offered some reforms for the university but it was not enough for the students.  The students and trade unions called a two day strike after talks they had earlier was a fail.

The first day there was violence on the University.  Some masked protesters were seen throwing Molotov cocktails at the police while the police were using water canons to disperse the crowd.  There were public buses used as barricades in alight of the University.  There was so much tear gas being thrown around buy the police that the kindergarten had to evacuated.

The promises that the government made was that they would reform the whole Chile education system.  The protesters wanted the central government to put more money into public schools and universities and not as much in the private schools.

The President has answered the protesters with a limited reform around $4bn in extra funding.  but he has a rejected the ideas for full state control and free education.  This should probably voted on so the government can have a look at how many people actually want and need this.
